Description
Liquid damage can be a challenging issue for an electronic device. When a device is exposed to water or other liquids, it can lead to short circuits, corrosion, and permanent damage to internal components. Understanding the extent of the damage is crucial in determining the best course of action for repair. Sea water or drinks containing sugar can be particularly troublesome.
Immediate Steps After Liquid Exposure
- Avoid Heat: Do not use a hair dryer or place the device in an oven. Excessive heat can cause more damage.
- Turn Off the Device: Immediately power down the device to prevent any short circuits.
- Remove Accessories: Take out any connected accessories, such as SIM cards, memory cards, and external devices. If the device has a removable battery remove it immediately.
- Dry the Exterior: Use a soft cloth to gently dry the exterior of the device.
- Do not attempt to charge the device.
- If the device is getting hot put it somewhere safe as there is a small but potential risk of fire.
At TCS, being a coastal repairer, we are well versed in water damage repairs with a very good success rate of recovering a devices functionality. We offer an initial cleaning and triage service for liquid damage devices where the device is stripped, cleaned and the circuit boards are cleaned in a specialist isopropyl ultrasonic bath that removes all traces of moisture, mineral build up, corrosion, salt, sugar, etc.
Once cleaned the device is reassembled and tested and we are able to quote for any parts that may be needed to complete the repair, that may be none, for phones it’s often a screen replacement, for laptops and MacBooks a keyboard, if the device requires parts we will send a quote for approval before undertaking the work.
Our success rate with liquid damage repair is around 80%, that does mean of course 20% of the time a device is not repairable, we still need to charge the triage fee for non repairable devices unfortunately as we still need to undertake the full, and not insignificant work to clean it up for testing.
For a liquid damage repair you can drop it in to Truro or Newquay or mail it in, DO NOT mail in hot devices!
